The Office : Review

Updated: Jan 25, 2021

The Office described as an American mockumentary sitcom television series whose first episode aired in 2005 and ran for 9 seasons till 2013 is one of the best you will ever see. The show can be watched after decades and still feel good, but there are already many moments in the series' history that are disturbing considering some changes in perspective over the years.

Points of discussion:

•Feel of the series

•Characters

•Best Moments

•The series finale

Feel of the series:

As an individual who has recently started working, The Office's mockumentary approach makes the series fun while still being relatable. At first The Office seems like a normal comedy series but as the seasons pass the characters are developed over time and before you know it you don't want these people to leave the series (or your life). The series has the capacity to make one laugh rolling on the floor while also making us deeply connect with the characters emotionally.

Characters:

The character of Michael Scott reminds me of Marvel Comics creator Stan Lee who created now infamous superhero Tony Stark a.k.a Iron Man as a person who is not likeable but force the audience to love the character. Michael Scott starts off as a somewhat pleasant but unlikeable character, but he is the best of them all. I seriously wondered how the series would progress after Michael left in Season 7, the show still remained fun as we were invested in all the characters, but there were times when one could feel a void.

Jim and Pam, they are so good together! Jim goes from a carefree guy who likes the receptionist to a father who also opens his own business, he learns to become more responsible. John Krasinski is fabulous as Jim. Pam never really realised her dreams and went with the flow but seeks to live her dreams once she is with Jim who is more accepting than her ex. Pam was one of the main reasons Michael was more appealing. Michael's bond with Pam is like none other.

Dwight the top performing salesman, assistant to the regional manager is annoying to be with, sure... but he is fun to watch. Jim and Dwight's friendly banter and pranks make the show even better.

Angela being the pride filled cat person. Kevin being the dumb, cute, plumpy, band member. Creed being unaware of what's happening but is also upto things. Kelly the attention seeker who fall for all of Ryan's lies. Stanley who shines when you don't expect him to and yeah, he is tired of his wife and life. I could go on..Overall The Office does a good job at bringing in diverse characters and they are done so well be it the comedic gags or the emotional notes.

The series finale:

With Michael gone and the future questionable, it was near impossible to give this series a proper and satisfying end. The series kind of becomes more self-aware in the sense that the characters mention the time they have spent together which is also the time we have spent with the characters, the documentary being released which is like the series itself because it is revealed that everything was filmed and the documentary's press conference whose audience react the same way we would. The series finale is filled with call backs to earlier seasons and episodes. The last four episodes especially made me teary eyed. Pam finally gets to read the card that Jim had hidden in season 2 but only after watching a clip of all their best moments over the years. The characters already felt like a family but in the final season they prove that they are. The smallest of moments brought joy. Out of excitement before watching the finale I had spoilt Michael's cameo but when he appeared in the episode...oh gosh...left me speechless and tears of happiness formed in my eyes. The final words of the Dunder Mifflin employees before they finally leave was so well done to reflect the end of the series.

The Office executes moments that we know are on the horizon with perfection.

Best moments:

Apart from the jokes, which are numerous. For me the best moments are the emotional ones.

Here are some of my most favorites:

Jim and Pam's first kiss at the end of season 2

Jim's proposal to Pam at the beginning of season 5

Jim and Pam's marriage in season 6

The tie though..

Michael's proposal to Holly in season 7

Michael's good bye in season 7

The last few episodes of season 9

Jim giving the card to Pam that he wrote in season 2

Dwight's family singing their family song and getting along

Jim's prank on Dwight where he told Dwight that he couldn't be his bestest mensch because he had to be older than him and Michael returns to serve as Dwight's best man.

The Office has a special place in my heart. The cast does such a good job at bringing their characters to life so much so that you can't distinguish what's real or what is being acted out. Moreover, who can forget 'That's what she said' or 'Did I stutter' or Jena Fischer's beautiful voice saying 'Dunder Mifflin, this is Pam' or Jim exclaiming 'Beesly!' or Dwight's numerous lectures.

I feel like all my children grew up and then they married each other. It's every parent's dream. - Michael Scott (Season 9, Finale)

.......only here it will be the characters. I will miss this series more than I can express.

There's a lot of beauty in ordinary things. Isn't that kind of the point? - Pam (Season 9, Finale, Last Dialogue)
