Marvel Vs DC : The Multiverse War

Updated: Aug 27, 2020

I am a bigger Marvel fan than I am a DC fan but I have had the feeling that DC could beat Marvel if they made good use of their source material to do amazing original stories. It is very evident that the 2010's was Marvel's time - 2008's Iron Man was a movie that changed the comic book genre, 2012's Avengers redefined the genre, Captain America : The Winter Soldier was an amazing spy-thriller set in the MCU, Guardians Of The Galaxy effortlessly introduced a group of misfits with a good story, Captain America : Civil War pitted Marvel's two most popular onscreen characters against each other, Avengers : infinity War achieved the impossible by juggling many different story arcs and characters to tell a compact story from the villains perspective and every other movie towards the end of the Infinity Saga made $1B at the box office with Avengers : Endgame going on to become the highest grossing movie of all time. DC has had their fair share of success - 2013's Man of Steel is a pretty good Superman movie, Wonder Woman is the definition of what a female led superhero movie should be, Batman V Superman : Dawn of Justice was mediocre but Zack Snyder's amazing visuals and the introduction of the DC trinity made the film bearable. Joker was a fabulous standalone story on mental health and society and Shazam brought a breath of fresh air and comic relief to the DCEU.

While many assume and feel that Marvel is dead after Endgame and a prequel kicking off the next phase and saga doesn't seem to be doing any good to resolve that feeling. I strongly believe that Black Widow has potential to be something great and upcoming projects - The Eternals, Shang-Chi and The Legend Of The Ten Rings, Doctor Strange : In The Multiverse Of Madness, WandaVision, Untitled Spider-Man 3, Thor : Love and Thunder & unannounced projects like the X-Men and Fantastic Four have tremendous potential and will do what no franchise has ever done i.e, have a TV universe that affects and directly ties in with the movie universe. Projects like Doctor Strange : In The Multiverse of Madness, WandaVision and Loki will introduce and take us into the MCU's multiverse, possibly tying in to the SUMC (Sony Universe of Marvel Characters) bringing in Venom, Carnage, Morbius and Spider-Woman among others all while leading up to one of the most insane comic arcs that can be put on screen - Secret Wars! There is a lot that can be achieved.

Though DC beat Marvel at making the first female led superhero movie and made it good at that and also brought Atlantis to the big screen before Marvel, the latter was thought to be the first to introduce the concept of the multiverse to the general audience coming out of Endgame. But DC Fandome turned the tides when Walter Hamada - President of DC Films announced in the Multiverse 101 Panel, that all things DC would be a part of a greater multiverse. As seen in recent years DC movies like Joker, Harley Quinn : Birds of Prey and upcoming projects like The Batman and The Suicide Squad were said to not be part of the DCEU and were standalone projects. Just a few days before the fan convention Michael Keaton, who played the caped crusader in 1989's Batman was rumored for the upcoming Flash movie which was confirmed during the Multiverse 101 Panel and adding to that was confirmation of another rumor that Ben Affleck, who played Batman in the DCEU would also have a small role in the Flash movie, which makes sense considering the film is rumored to be adapting the flash point story arc where Barry Allen (The Flash) rewrites the timeline.

Now with both Marvel and DC in the multiverse game, having had their fair share of ups and downs, it would be interesting to see who would be the first and most importantly who will do the multiverse right. While Marvel has already introduced the concept of alternate realities in 2016's Doctor Strange and dived into time travel in 2019's Avengers: Endgame which is sure to be a main part of how Marvel plans on introducing and maintaining their multiverse. The only problem that I see is that everything since 2008's Iron Man has been happening in the same universe whereas DC who have not yet introduced the concept of the multiverse yet, have movies that happen in DC's multiverse. DC's movies though not being well received have introduced characters from different realities and when the time comes to put all the characters of the multiverse in one giant event movie where the story would most likely be the destruction of the multiverse (Crisis for DC and Secret Wars for Marvel), DC will have the upper hand as we know characters from each reality and we wouldn't want our favorite characters from any reality dying provided they build out those characters and the only way that Marvel could beat DC is by having the upcoming movies take place in different realities or jump realities and introduce us and make us fall in love with the alternate versions of characters that we already love. Ultimately it is not about deciding which company or studio/film franchise is better but this competition will ensure that we fans get the best versions of the stories that each side is trying to tell.
